The bigger download was exceptionally fast. For whatever reason, the initial small file download was slow. The main game is then downloaded, weighing in at 3.9GB. The game download has an initial 38MB download. It looks like you get characters for specified time frames. I'm guessing it's possible to not have to pay if you register a physical figure or play set you have. As mentioned below, you can add physical figures and playsets to your account. NOTE: I'm sure there'll be a cost via buying virtual figures or play sets at some point, but I haven't played far enough into it yet. You can separately add Wii U or PSN logins if you like.
